Mount Defiance
Mount Defiance is an 840 ft (260 m) high hill on the New York side of Lake Champlain, in the northeastern United States. It is notable in that the hill militarily dominates both Fort Ticonderoga and Mount Independence, but it was deemed inaccessible so never fortified. Mount Defiance was previously known as Sugar Loaf. In the 1777 Siege of Fort Ticonderoga, the British army succeeded in positioning artillery on Mount Defiance, causing the Americans to withdraw from both forts without a fight.
Visit Mount Defiance for a birds-eye view of Ticonderoga’s epic military landscape and discover how the summit shaped America’s history.
Bring a lunch and enjoy an unforgettable view at the picnic tables spread at the top of the mountain. Take the hike or drive all the way up the mountain to savor the spectacular beauty of America’s most historic landscape. Mount Defiance is included in Fort Ticonderoga’s General Admission Ticket or can be purchased separately at the base of the mountain.
